How to Record Screen on Windows

If you need to record the screen of your Windows PC, you can use both the built-in tool of Windows 10, and some software used for this purpose, compatible with the previous versions of the Microsoft operating system. In the next chapters I will show you some solutions that can be for you.

Games Bar

Using the Game Bar feature of Windows 10, you can record the screen of software running on your computer. With its screen recording feature, you can record gameplay sessions of video games or other software, as long as the video card installed in your PC supports Intel Quick Sync H.264, NVidia NVENC or AMD VCE encoding.

First, make sure that the feature is active on your computer: open the Windows Settings panel, using the Win + i key combination or by clicking on the gear icon in the Start menu. Once this is done, go to the Games> Games bar and make sure that the lever next to the words Record game clicks, screenshots and broadcast using the games bar is set to Enabled.

Now you just have to start any software or video game and press the Win + G key combination, to open the Windows 10 Game Bar panel. At this point, press the registration key or press the Win key combination + Alt + R to start capturing the video of the running software or game screen.

IObit iFun Screen Recorder

If you do not want to use the integrated Windows functionality, perhaps because you do not consider it sufficiently advanced, you can turn your attention to solutions developed by third parties: one of the most interesting is certainly IObit iFun Screen Recorder.

iFun Screen Recorder is a program that allows you to record the PC screen, a portion of it or the window of a specific application; all inclusive of audio (both system and microphone) and, if desired, webcam shooting. Capture high-quality captures up to 4K resolution at 60 FPS, with the ability to take screenshots while recording, choose from over 12 output formats, and edit final videos.

It is compatible with all versions of Windows, from 7 onwards and can be downloaded and used for free. However, to unlock all the features of the software you need to purchase its PRO version, which costs 26,99 euro/year (in promo, instead of 49,99 euro/year) or 44,99 euro for each PC with a lifetime license (in promo, instead of 79,99 euro for each PC).

Among the additional features available only in the PRO version of IObit iFun Screen Recorder, I would like to point out the possibility to add a custom watermark to the recordings (and remove the default one provided in the free version), maximum resolution of recordings (up to 4K), better performance in terms of FPS and hardware acceleration, to have less lag (ideal for recording games); then automatic application update and free technical support 24/7.

To download IObit iFun Screen Recorder for free, just connect to the official website of the program and click on the Free Download button. When the download is complete, open the .exe file obtained and complete the setup by clicking in sequence on the Yes, Next, Accept, Next buttons two more consecutive times and then Finish.

When installation is complete, to start a recording with IObit iFun Screen Recorder, all you have to do is start the program and adjust your preferences: through the Select an area menu you can choose what to capture between full screen, window, area or area with fixed ratio of 4: 3 or 16: 9; using the Loudspeaker button you can choose whether to activate or deactivate system audio capture; using the Mic button you can choose whether to activate or deactivate the capture of the microphone audio; using the Mouse button you can choose whether to enable or disable the capture of the mouse cursor, while using the Webcam button you can choose whether to enable or disable the capture of the webcam shot.

By clicking on the Recording Settings item you can then access a panel with menus to choose the location to save the recording, size and format of the output video, frame rate, quality and format of the audio and, in the case of the PRO version of IObit iFun Screen Recorder, the watermark to be imprinted on your movie. To save all the settings, just click on the Save button, located at the bottom right.

To go even deeper into the settings, you can instead click on the ☰ button located at the top right and select the Settings item from the menu that appears. This will open the window with the preferences of IObit iFun Screen Recorder, through which you can adjust the general settings of the software, those for recording, webcam (e.g. where to place the frame with the recovery and how large it should be), format (type of output files, resolution, bitrate etc.) and hotkeys (to set keyboard shortcuts to start / stop recording and take screenshots).

When you are ready to record, you just have to click on the REC button and wait for the countdown to finish (which, if necessary, you can disable from the settings).

You will see the IObit iFun Screen Recorder toolbar in the corner of the screen. The latter contains the buttons to pause and stop recording, the counter with the duration of the movie, the button to take screenshots and the one to hide the bar itself.

Alternatively, I point out that you can also call IObit iFun Screen Recorder from its icon located in the system notification area (next to the Windows clock).

After recording is complete, you will find your video in the My Creations section of IObit iFun Screen Recorder (as well as in the output folder you specified). Next to the thumbnail of each recording, you will find three buttons, useful for playing the movie, editing it or deleting it.

If you click on the edit button (the pencil icon), an editor will open to set new start and end points for the recording using specific indicators to be moved on a timeline. At the end of the changes, to save everything, press the Save as button and choose a destination folder; otherwise click on Discard to cancel the changes. Easier than that ?!

IObit Online Screen Recording

If you can’t (or don’t want to) install new programs, know that you can record your computer screen directly from your browser. Just use the IObit Online Screen Recording tool, which is completely free and supports some of the most popular browsers, such as Chrome, Firefox and Opera.

Thanks to this fully online solution, you can record up to two 10-minute videos a day capturing everything that happens on your computer screen, in a window or in a single browser tab, including system or audio. microphone. It is not possible to record the webcam (for this function you have to use more complete solutions, such as the aforementioned IObit iFun Screen Recorder).

To use the IObit Online Screen Recording tool, connect to its home page and click first on the Record Screen Now button and then on the Continue Online Registration button. If you are using macOS and you have not yet authorized your browser to record the computer screen, you will need to access System Preferences and check the box relating to your browser, as indicated on the screen (after clicking on the lock icon and entering the macOS admin password).

At this point, choose whether to record microphone audio, browser audio or no audio, go ahead and indicate whether to capture the entire screen, an application window or a browser tab. In the same screen, if you also want to record audio, check the box to allow sound recording that you find at the bottom left (available only on Windows). Finally, press the Share button and then the REC button. Registration will then begin. Please do not close the IObit recording tool tab.

When you have finished your recording, press the Stop sharing button, go back to the IObit Online Screen Recording tab and press the item to download the video in WebM, a video format that you can easily open in your browser or in a video player among those more complete.

Other Programs to Record the Windows Screen

Now here is a series of alternative solutions, to be considered if those previously reported were not enough for you.

  • Open Broadcaster Software (OBS): is a free open source program that allows you to record your computer screen, with the ability to stream it live on broadcasting platforms, such as Twitch or YouTube.
  • FastStone Screen Capture: is a paid software, at a cost of $19,95, which allows you to take screenshots as images or record videos. There are also advanced editor tools, to make changes to both screens and videos, such as converting them to GIFs or making cuts. The software can be downloaded in a free 30-day evaluation version.
  • Screenpresso: is a free Windows tool that allows you to take screenshots or record videos in HD (with watermark). However, additional features can be unlocked by purchasing the Pro version at a cost of 29,99 euro, such as removing the watermark and adding system sounds to recorded videos.
